This very well presented gallery was recently mentioned in The Economist as an important stepping stone in the making of a famed artist. Recent retrospectives focused more on already famous artists. Not too easy to find due to the unusual door numbering in Dover Street.
The space looks funny after the extensive refurbishment. The Daniel Richter exhibition was good though
The space is magnificent. At the time of this review there's a Rauschenberg exhibition, the pieces are hung with plenty of space in between to admire each of them. It was not crowded when I visit, so I could take my time.
"Duchamp's fountain budge" for this gallery! The exhibition/performance by Tom Shachs showed how disrespectful the gallery is to the audience, art lovers and also to the artist, his work and his collective.I don't think this gallery will have one day essentially well prepared exhibition, I do not believe also this gallery somehow one day will improve or change the history of art. Typical "art" supermarket.
I invested quite some effort and time to visit this gallery in Dover Street, specifically for the 24 hour, Tom Sachs passport event. Frustratingly, despite the door staff being perfectly charming and empathetic, after 6 hours of waiting outside I politely enquired about the queue. The lady managing the gallery at that time was dismissive to the point of insult and said that anyone who didnt like it could leave. Her response was unnecessary & and resulted in a number of people walking away at 2am, despite having queued for many hours. Of course, 20 per person is insignificant but that sort of arrogance is all too common in the commercial art world. It is all about money - not art, and that was clearly demonstrated. Sorry Thadeus but that attitude is dreadful. Nice building.
